Police and immigration officials have been in the hotel where Pakistan wicket-keeper Zulqarnain Haider is hiding after alleged threats from match-fixers.
Haider has refused to reveal the identity of those behind the alleged threats
The player is claiming political asylum in the UK after fleeing to London from Dubai and has said he will retire from international cricket.
He claims to have received death threats after hitting the winning runs in a one-day international against South Africa.
Speaking from the hotel, Sky News’ Tom Parmenter said around 10 police officers and at least two immigration officials spent 20 minutes inside the building.
Parmenter added: “We believe they were speaking to the player.
“They have now left and drove off at speed in a police van. It’s impossible to tell whether Haider was inside the vehicle.”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has offered its support to the player and confirmed it is regular contact with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Haroon Lorgat, ICC chief executive, said: “We understand his plight if reports are indeed true, but we can only help if he is willing to engage with us.”
Earlier, Haider told Pakistan’s GEO television network: “I have decided it is best for me to retire from international cricket since my family and I are constantly getting threats.
“I can assure you that I am safe and sound. I’m not arrested but I cannot tell where I am hiding for the sake of protection of my life.
I would rather flee away than sell out the dignity and respect of my motherland
Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider
“Immigration officials in the UK were kind to me and proposed (to) me (that I) hire the services of a counsellor but I am yet to reach a decision.”
Haider would not identify who threatened him, saying only that he was approached by “one person who asked me to fix the fourth and fifth match and (said) there would be problem for me if I did not do it”.
The GEO network reported he had said he would rather flee than “sell out the dignity and respect of my motherland” by agreeing to throw matches.
The 24-year-old reportedly received threatening messages after he made 19 not out and hit the winning runs during the game in question at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Pakistan cricket was rocked by a series of allegations during the summer
Haider has been assured of help by Pakistan’s high commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan, who told Bloomberg: “We will give him any consular assistance that he requires.”
It comes after a series of spot-fixing allegations against the Pakistani team during their tour of England last summer saw four players questioned by police

Every day at sunset since 1947, spectators have gathered at the Wagah Border crossing between India and Pakistan to watch rival border guards kick up dust in an entertaining flag-lowering ceremony. This daily display of shouts and stomps serves as a unique gauge of Indo-Pakistani relations – increasingly tense since the Mumbai terrorist attacks last November.
Linda Blake was among the spectators watching the ceremony at the Wagah checkpoint recently and has this report.
