Pakistan has been hit by a wave of bombings in recent weeks. This is probably in response to a military push against Taliban militants in the northwest of the country.
But an attack on Thursday, July 2nd in Rawalpindi was the closest to the capital since the launch of the offensive.
Rawalpindi is home to the headquarters of the Pakistani army and other state agencies.
Police have tightened security here and were searching people and checking cars entering and leaving the area.
[Mohammad Akram, Retired Official]:
“These things are taking place in reaction to whatever is going on in Swat, Buner and the adjoining areas. They (the Taliban) are facing defeat and they are on the run, and now they are harassing people. But God-willing, things will get better soon.”
Newspapers carried headlines and published pictures of the attack.
[Mohammad Aslam, Local Resident]:
“Everyone is scared. They are killing people, they are harassing people.”
The Taliban seized a district only 60 miles from Islamabad two months ago.
Now the Pakistani military is trying to regain control and push them back.
