Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud is dead, top Pakistani government officials and Taliban leaders confirmed Wednesday, though some figures in the Al Qaeda-linked network deny the claim.

Rumors have swirled about Mr. Mehsuds status since he was reported to have died from injuries sustained in a US drone strike in mid-January. If the reports are confirmed, his death would mark the second Pakistani Taliban leader killed by the US in six months. Similar confusion also surrounded the death of the previous commander, Baitullah Mehsud.

The Associated Press reports that Pakistans interior minister and a senior intelligence official confirmed that Mehsud, who was in his late 20s, had died, though neither gave details about his death. I have credible information that he’s dead but I don’t have any confirmation, Pakistani daily Dawn quoted Interior Minister Rehman Malik saying on Wednesday. Mr. Malik also said that Qari Hussein, a senior Taliban commander and one of Mehsuds possible successors, may have also been killed.

But details of exactly where he died still varied. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Taliban claim Mehsud was wounded in a drone strike Jan. 14 in Shaktoi, a village in South Waziristan, and died Sunday in the southern Punjab province city of Multan, on his way to Karachi for medical treatment. Pakistani security sources, meanwhile, claimed he died in the tribal areas, not in Multan. And the Associated Press quoted a tribal elder as saying he had attended Mehsuds funeral in late January in the Mamuzai area of Orakzai. (See a map of the region here.)

The New York Times reported last month that American intelligence was 90 percent sure that Mehsud was already dead.

While the Los Angeles Times reports that the Pakistani Taliban on Tuesday confirmed Mehsuds death, the Wall Street Journal reports that a Taliban spokesman on Tuesday denied that Mehsud had died, and Dawn reports that two Taliban officials also issued denials. The Journal also reports, however, that there are signs that the long-rumored event may have taken place.

The Christian Science Monitor reported earlier this month on Mehsuds possible successors.

While Mehsuds apparent death may mark a psychological victory for the US, it will likely do little to help the military campaign against the Taliban. The organization was brutally successful in launching attacks after the US killed the previous commander in August, as the Los Angeles Times notes.

Pakistan is offering a US$126,000 reward for help in identifying the gunmen who attacked Sri Lankas cricket team.

Pakistans Punjab province took out advertisements in newspapers today (Wednesday) offering the reward. The ad shows two alleged attackers, one dressed in brown and the other blue, both carrying backpacks and guns.

Around a dozen attackers armed with guns, grenades and rocket launchers attacked the visiting players in the eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday. The assault underscored the challenges facing Pakistan as it battles rising Islamist violence. Six police officers and a driver were killed. Seven players, an umpire and an assistant coach were wounded, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.

In the August 8 edition of his column, Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz noted Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) August 6 statement that he “never called for an invasion of Pakistan” in his August 1 foreign policy speech and that “the misreporting that was done needs to be cleared up.” Kurtz described Obama as “blaming the media” and responded: “I sure didn’t see anyone reporting that Obama wanted to invade Pakistan.” Kurtz continued: “I read that he would be willing to conduct raids against al-Qaeda without necessarily getting permission from Pakistan’s sovereign government.” In fact, numerous media outlets have reported that Obama, in the August 1 speech, stated that he was willing to “invade Pakistan.”

During the speech, Obama asserted that “If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets [in Pakistan] and President [Pervez] Musharraf won’t act, we will,” but he did not elaborate on the nature of this action:

OBAMA: As president, I would make the hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. military aid to Pakistan conditional, and I would make our conditions clear: Pakistan must make substantial progress in closing down the training camps, evicting foreign fighters, and preventing the Taliban from using Pakistan as a staging area for attacks in Afghanistan.

I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges. But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an Al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will.

And Pakistan needs more than F-16s to combat extremism. As the Pakistani government increases investment in secular education to counter radical madrasas, my administration will increase America’s commitment. We must help Pakistan invest in the provinces along the Afghan border, so that the extremists’ program of hate is met with one of hope. And we must not turn a blind eye to elections that are neither free nor fair — our goal is not simply an ally in Pakistan, it is a democratic ally.

During an August 6 campaign appearance in Iowa, an audience member asked Obama about his Pakistan comments, and Obama responded, “The misreporting that was done needs to be cleared up. I never called for an invasion of Pakistan.”

Despite Kurtz’s suggestion to the contrary, numerous media outlets reported that Obama said he intended or was willing to “invade” Pakistan, including ABC News, CBS News, several major newspapers, MSNBC, Fox News, and columns in The Weekly Standard and the New York Post.
