Saltwater Pier Fishing On Jekyll Island Pier

Although Jekyll Island–one of Georgia’s stunning Golden Isles–is primarily often called being the setting for the Jekyll Island Membership, as soon as the most exclusive club on the earth, it is also a chief fishing spot for those of us who want to take pleasure in a leisurely and economical day of fishing. Besides, the Georgia State Report flounder was caught from this very pier.
Pier fishing is nice for all members of the household because of simple accessibility, safety, restroom facilities, refreshments and fishing tackle, all shut to hand. Don’t let anybody idiot you, there are many fish to be taken around the pier and on the adjoining beaches for those who like to attempt pulling a seine.
We caught a number of species of fish throughout the 2 afternoons we visited the Jekyll Island pier, not to say, loads of blue crab and a number of other good stone crab too. We unloaded out gear on the entrance to the pier and only walked 30 or forty feet to a spot we–my spouse and i–each agreed appeared promising for each of our most popular fishing methods.
Not Only a Fishing Pier!
Attending to the Pier
Since we had been staying at the Jekyll Island Campground, we merely needed to drive throughout the highway to enter the quarter mile entrance road alongside stunning marshes to succeed in the pier.
There are great spots to picnic and nature trails to follow for those who don’t need to fish. There may be all manner of wildlife to see together with the natural magnificence of the site.
The first thing I noticed when i approached the parking area was the multitudes of mullet going round the purpose and immediately under the pier close to shore.
I couldn’t wait to solid my internet for both large mullet to smoke or small mullet to make use of for live bait. I would tire of throwing the online and catching mullet earlier than my two days have been over.
In the meantime, Beth had hit the jackpot with her crab basket catching each blue and stone crab. She was joined by several different ladies and they all appeared to take pleasure in their impromptu “crab and gab” party.
No kidding, you meet some great individuals whereas pier fishing which often results in seeing them once more on later visits to the Jekyll Island Pier as well as to the campground.
Since we love each camping, fishing, and historical past this is an ideal spot for us to go to as typically as we get the prospect.
Fishing, Mates, Flounder, and Fun!
I met a couple of guys on the pier who I rapidly fell into dialog with while we fished and shared a few beers. I had forged my net numerous instances already and had a cooler stuffed with huge mullet (Beth neglected to inform me this was our beverage ice DOH!) however none small enough to use for reside bait.
My new good friend Steve provided to let me use some mud minnows he had caught in a trap earlier, so I used to be comfortable. I am virtually embarrassed to buy dwell bait since I love to throw a web, it’s a manthing-o my wife tells me. I simply tell her I wish to reside off of nature’s bounty. “Yeah right” she says. But the word “cheap” was never talked about.
The flounder, trout, sheephead and whiting had been biting well and an occasional shark was hooked as well. One lady even caught a flounder in her open basket crab lure. Because the mullet were teeming in the area, there were a few people pulling a 50 ft. seine on Driftwood Seaside, which is adjacent to the pier, and having nice success at their enterprise.

The type of fishing gear required for pier fishing is dependent upon what kind of fishing you plan to do. I might suggest all the time using a steel leader when pier fishing due to the barnacles on the pilings and because most saltwater fish have very sharp teeth. It is extremely frustrating to lose a nice fish when the chief is lower or abraded and the line separates.
No less than 20 lb. line is advisable in addition to plenty of weight because the tides here might be very robust when going in or out. In case you are capable of throwing a solid internet it is feasible to catch not only reside bait of mullet or shrimp, however consuming dimension fish too. A 5’ or 6’ ft.–10’ to 12’ diameter when open–solid net is a lot huge.
A floating minnow bucket or battery powered aerator will are available handy for retaining your minnows or shrimp alive until you hook that monster flounder while casting around the pilings. Sheephead and crimson drum are sometimes caught utilizing fiddler crabs dropped proper by the barnacle coated pier pilings.
Another helpful merchandise to have is a landing net for hoisting the fish from the water after successfully getting the fish to the pier. Each flounder and spotted sea trout have delicate mouths and are sometimes misplaced when making an attempt to raise them to the pier using only the fishing line. I ought to know, I discovered this lesson the arduous manner!
Crabs are easily caught within the shallows using a round open crab entice or a box kind basket with escape holes for the smaller crabs. Both blue and stone crabs are caught in these waters with the stone crab having one claw eliminated and returned to the water to develop another until caught again. This identical crab might furnish many such scrumptious claws during its lifetime.
However the Jekyll Island Pier isn’t just for fisherman and crabbers, there were a couple of people merely enjoying the day within the shade as they played dominoes and downed just a few adult drinks. Different sightseers meandered alongside the pier or watched excitedly as I pulled in web after internet crammed with big mullet after a particularly giant college swam underneath the pier.
The Jekyll Fishing Center–situated close to the foot of the pier–not only furnishes bait stone island membrana tc jacket navy and sort out, however books a number of various kinds of fishing trips in the realm. It’s great to be ready to buy extra ice in addition to, bait and snacks without having to walk very far, as is the case in many salt water pier conditions.
After we had fished a while, Beth went again to the campsite and returned with Ally, our beloved Jack Russell, who proceeded to charm the other anglers as is her forte. Being a particularly good dog, she didn’t seem very occupied with inspecting the large crabs up shut.
Just before sundown more automobiles and trucks started to arrive in the parking area. The sunset watchers have been coming to stand their vigil as the sky turned from blue to gold and on to a vivid orange as it glowed by the large Sydney Lanier cable bridge in the distance.
It seemed to be a ritual which we heartily agreed with. What better manner to finish an ideal day of fishing, crabbing, and speaking with fishing pals as the sun slowly painted the skies as no artist could.
Though nobody can all the time assure fish on any fishing trip, I imagine if one picked his time and tides right he would have a good likelihood at catching just a few fish of some sort on this pier. And should you don’t catch anything
So what, the beauty of the ocean and unsullied wilderness surrounding the Jekyll Island Pier, and the friends you may make, is well definitely worth the journey. A win-win situation, in my view.

15 lbs. 10 0zs. Caught by a lady, as well.
How a lot did the record flounder weigh
I plan to do a brand new article about what species of fish are caught on the pier, Robert. The state file flounder was caught on the Jekyll island pier and that i’ve helped land eight+ foot sharks there also. Shrimp are so plentiful you possibly can catch them with a throw net. Each Blue crab and Stone crab can be caught easily at the shallow end of the pier.
When the sea trout begin running you may get weary of pulling them in, however you’ll be able to at all times catch a couple of other instances than the primary run. As I said, my favorite spot to fish..
Will you be doing an article on the sea trout run

I loved the article. Nice footage. This does appear to be a beautiful place to spend the day.
I say go ahead and begin digging 🙂
We not too long ago had one which traveled over a mile through our farm and barely missed my home by a few hundred yards. Even then it stayed a bit off the bottom nevertheless it still blew down and twisted the tops out of a number of hundred timber on our property. Scary when you are feeling your private home creaking and hear the noise. I could should dig a cellar if this retains up! Cheap Stone Island lol!
Nicely, keep clear. I remember just a few years in the past a tornado touched down close to us on hwy 99. Simply missed us. Messed up a part of the scenic hwy 99 by tearing up some stunning reside oaks. Keep safe.
Oh nicely, however my fishing hubs don’t actually do too well anyway.
I’m extra apprehensive in regards to the tornadoes as we’ve already had a few very shut misses in the previous few months. Nonetheless, a hurricane is dangerous news also. Thanks Terrie!
Thanks Randy. I think I will depart it well sufficient alone though. It was enjoyable reading yours and hollies and there are such a lot of others on right here too that I’ve learn at this time. Had no idea. Thought I used to be being original 🙂 . Remembered y’all had some fishing hubs however had been undecided that they were surf fishing ones. Hope you Georgia people make it though this Hurricane season unscathed!

We surfed fished on Edisto Island when our children were younger. Thought I might write a number of hubs on the subject, but before I started thought I would check and see for those who or habee have already written one (can’t do better than you two and wouldn’t want to attempt)! Nice hub. Hoping to make my manner down to Brunswick space soon. Take care. I feel I might write a hub on surf fishing for freshmen…I see habee has performed a fantastic one on bait for surf fishing which is a exceptional hub. Boy, am I prepared for summer season!!!!!! Blissful fishing!
Thanks, Stephanie! Actually, I am on the Jekyll Island campground proper now! I will be fishing on the pier later right this moment too. Yep, your husband missed a very good likelihood for some great fishing on this pier.
Thanks again for stopping by and in your nice enter.

After i inform my husband about your success fishing from the pier at Jekyll Island, he’ll be sorry that he did not get his fishing gear out when we camped there a number of years in the past! I enjoyed your fishing tales as nicely as the pictures of this beautiful place.
Why heck yeah, WD! I’ve eaten many a hand chopped barbecue pork sandwich on the Georgia Pig! I always beloved the outdated string of bare light bulbs hanging exterior. But with pork cooked that good, who cares about environment.
And i did catch a flounder on a mud minnow, in addition to a shark. Thanks for reminding me about the Pig and on your time and comments.

Hey Randy – This is nice. I love the realm. You actually stirred some reminiscences. Is it okay to say the Georgia Pig BBQ on the highway in from I95. Again earlier than the highway was completed, we would drive out of our technique to go to the little cabin. It was the only restaurant I have ever been to where the cook wasn’t carrying a shirt. He solely had on his overalls. Of course, they don’t do this anymore.
Strive a mud minnow beneath the pier from the water. You might get a fat flounder.
Thanks CM, I can be pleased to go fishing with you anytime. I plan to go back shortly when the roe mullet start running.
Thanks for stopping by and for your time.
@Diogenes-In fact I’m acquainted with St. George Island, Bob! I used to spend fairly a little bit of time in that area, especially around Mexico Seashore and Port St. Joe. The fishing is great virtually anywhere along that stretch of the gulf.
You might be proper concerning the exercise one will get when tossing a cast web too. I was worn out after those 2 days at Jekyll.
Thanks as all the time for trying out my hub and on your time and input.

I was fascinated and made envious in equal ammounts. I used to do a little bit of angling in my time. And have used the weighted solid net in Florida (St George Island…worth a go to and never removed from you). Its excellent train too! “Multitudes of Mullet ” If that’s not the collective noun it should be…Bob

Thanks for the enter, Gordon. Like you, I really like all types of fishing and used to personal a ship for fishing on the salt flats within the nearby Gulf of Mexico.
However for ease of use, a pier is finest for a group of family or mates. You probably know the flounder as a sole and the sheephead appears like it’s named. It has a mouth resembling a sheep’s and the body is striped like a drum.
Yep, it’s easy to make associates on a fishing pier as most folks are glad to share their fishing tales.
Thanks for your time and comments and good luck in your upcoming fishing trip!

Loved the Hub, as fishing is a superb ardour of mine and I love reading about totally different experiences and fish caught around the world. I must admit that I’ve never even heard of a number of the species you point out but that is also a learning curve and helps gas the ambition to go to and fish totally different elements of the world.
Fairly a topical Hub this, for me. Although I’m going boat fishing on the sea and beach casting repeatedly right here in Scotland, it has been a fair few years since I’ve fished from a pier. (Largely because so a lot of them aren’t any extra…) Nonetheless, that is all changing at the tip of November when just a few of us are having a weekend’s pier fishing by day and sampling the delights of the hotel we’re staying in’s bar by evening – I’m wanting ahead to it. Might even make new associates like you probably did, as so usually happens when we’re fishing.
