Unst is the most northerly island in Shetland, and thus probably the most northerly of the British Isles. Noted for its beautiful scenery, geology, history and abundance of wildlife, the island is increasingly widespread with both guests and Shetland residents alike. House to a Nationwide Nature Reserve hosting a wealth of vital sea hen colonies, and arguably a number of the world’s most beautiful cliffs and beaches, Unst is an ideal place for nature lovers and people searching for outdoor adventure.
Recently the Unst community has benefited enormously from UnstFest – an annual summer festival showcasing all that the island has to offer, and attracting tons of of holiday makers each year as featured in the 2016 BBC collection ‘An Island Parish’. Other highlights of the calendar include the popular country show and the newly established Shetland Reel music festival.
The island is house to approximately 600 local residents, with Baltasound as the population centre. There is a good number of local amenities together with Baltasound Junior Highschool which has nursery, main and secondary departments. School transport is offered by Shetland Islands Council. Other amenities embody a leisure centre with swimming pool, grocery retailers, a Publish Office, garage with gas pumps, well being centre, lodge and a small boat marina. There are also weekly visits by the bank and hairdressers.
1 Batavia is situated approximately 6 miles from Baltasound, in the small village of Uyeasound. Located in Uyeasound is a range of common historical sites reminiscent of Greenwell’s Booth, a seventeenth century stone home. Uyeasound also has a preferred youth stone island jacket selfridges hostel, Gardiesfauld, which is a brief 10 minute stroll from 1 Batavia. The situation of the property means that it has great potential to be developed as a guest home, as well as a residential house.
Uyeasound is approximately fifty two miles north of Shetland’s capital Lerwick by road, and entails 2 inter-island ferry crossings. A ro-ro ferry runs from Toft on the Shetland mainland to Ulsta on the south end of the island of Yell. Arriving in Yell, observe the signs to Gutcher at the north end of Yell. Most ferries run direct from Gutcher to Belmont on the south finish of Unst, others stop in Fetlar earlier than arriving in Belmont. Ferries are regular, and a timetable can be discovered at the next hyperlink: http://www.shetland.gov.uk/ferries/timetable.asp
