Mystical Island Close to Melaka

Pulau Besar is an fascinating day journey vacation spot.
It’s situated about 15km south east of Melaka city and may be reached by ferry or velocity boat.

As the identify suggests, it is a big island (168 hectares) and is alleged to be formed like an expecting lady mendacity on her again, though I couldn’t see a lot resemblance myself. Perhaps they sliced a few of her ‘bulge’ off when they were building the golf course again within the 1990s.

It’s best identified for its historic Islamic graves, tombs and mausoleums which are scattered around the island.

Notable among these is the tomb of Sultan Al Ariffin Syeikh Ismail. In line with the discover board outdoors the tomb, Syeikh Ismail was the 18th descendant of the Prophet and was born in Baghdad in 1464AD. While visiting the Prophet’s tomb in Medina, he acquired a calling to go and spread Islam to Java. He reached Pulau Besar in 1495 and from there helped disseminate Islamic educating throughout the Malay Archipelago. He died at age 58 and was buried on the island.

The tomb of Syarifah Rodziah/Siti Sarah (one of Syeikh Ismail’s family) is situated nearby as are a number of different graves and mausoleums. These tombs appeal to many visitors, particularly Malaysian and Singaporean Muslims of Indian descent.

The island has numerous different attractions, some of that are quite mystical including:

– A lot of old wells, one among which is believed to include salt water when the tide is in and fresh water when the tide is out.

– Some apparently shaped rocks, including a stone skull, horse head rock and a split rock at the highest point of the island. Varied legends and myths are associated with these rocks.

– A village of elves and an elves’ palace.
– A cave, Gua Yunos, where warriors were stated to practice mysticism and be taught silat (Malaysian Martial arts)

You can find out more about these sights by visiting the Museum on the island, Muzium Pulau Besar, which explains among the weird and great legends and sights on the island. Entrance is RM5.

There was an attempt within the nineties/2000s to create a vacationer resort right here. A considerable hotel, Putera Island Resort, was built with a 750 seater ballroom amongst its many services. It closed down after just a few years of operation and now lies empty and wasted. Perhaps the elves sabotaged the resort!

There was some renovation exercise happening on the resort during my go to in December 2012. A sign mentioned an Islamic Centre so perhaps half or the entire resort is being transformed for that purpose.

There is a golf course adjacent to the resort. I believe it may now not be operational however it appears that the greens are still being maintained.

When i visited, the beaches on the island were clean and engaging and the sea was calm, inviting and appropriate for swimming, though being situated on the busy Straits of Malacca, it solely needs one ship to throw its garbage overboard for the beaches to be affected. Because the island can be a Muslim pilgrimage site this isn’t a place for lying on the seashore in a bikini however swimming sporting a T-shirt and shorts (i.e. Malaysian Type!) is acceptable.

There are a couple of food stalls and retailers on the island for refreshments.

How one can Get to Pulau Besar
Take the coast street (Freeway 5) from Melaka city in direction of Muar. At Umbai, follow the indicators for Umbai Jetty. Right here you’ll be able to park your car (RM5) and hire a velocity boat to take you to the island. I paid RM100 for the spherical journey. The boat is able to holding a dozen or so individuals so is good worth for a big group. After dropping us at the island, the boat driver gave us his cell quantity and we just referred to as him to choose us up after we needed to go back.

His title is Abu Chik with cellular 016-677 5035. I see from his business card that he additionally runs trips to smaller islands within the neighborhood akin to Pulau Lalang, Pulau Serimbun, Pulau Nangka, Pulau Dodol, Pulau Undan, Pulau Hanyut, Pulau Binatang, Pulau Burung, Pulau Feringgi and Pulau Hantu.
