This is actual news footage from a seven minute spot on the six o’clock news on CBS in 1967.
The Grateful Dead live on Hait Ashbury doing a street show. The video is a bit old, but the footage is awesome.
There is talk part way through by the news person speaking of the dangers for youth being sucked into the counter culture of the era… but the music continues.

@pbl1 If you bother …
@pbl1 If you bother to listen to Robert Hunter’s lyrics on albums like Box of Rain, Workingman’s Dead, Grateful Dead etc… they said far more about the human condition than any other band ever did. The fact that they resisted the urge make the shallow and crass political declarations of bands like the Airplane is something to be commended, not condemned.

The problem is that …
The problem is that the creators of this newsreport don`t differentiate between the Dead and the audience. The Grateful Dead were (and still are) musicians, who were more after, that`s what I think, new musical oportunities and challenges than being part of a ” counterculture “. Thus to call their musical activities a ” whitdrawl into privat satisfaction ” seems absolutly ridiculous. For the audience it might be true, but … it`s the GRATEFUL DEAD!!!

i agree with you…the problem was that most of the people there were trying to escape straight life…garcia and the founding members of the thing id imagine were more mature, and they had already been living on the fringes of mainstream culture for a while at this point
