These are busy times for west London engineer Ghulam Mustafa. His website, Pakistan Politics, was set up in July after the first stand-off between President Pervez Musharraf and the judiciary.
But since the army general declared a state of emergency in Pakistan on Saturday, including severe restrictions on the country’s print and broadcast media, handling e-mail queries and updating the site has taken over his life.
"It’s more than a full-time job. Some nights I can’t sleep," he told AFP by telephone Tuesday.
The site, http://pkpolitics.com had a modest 6,000 hits in its first four months. It has now passed the half-million mark after the weekend’s events, requiring Mustafa to get extra bandwidth to prevent the site crashing.
The BBC World Service radio’s Urdu section has upped its output from two hours a day to three and a half, its boss Mohammed Hanif told AFP.
Their 10-million-strong audience has also seen a "big surge," including in Gulf states, where there are many expatriate Pakistani workers.
And like satellite dishes, sales of short- and medium-wave radios have reportedly increased in Pakistan, he said, as locals clamour for hard fact instead of rumour.
Hanif likened the situation to the days when BBC World Service foreign language stations provided information to the Soviet bloc, although the Internet has become a new source of news since then.
"People have been calling our offices every hour to get their hourly updates. They’re so used to 24/7 news channels that they come to expect something," he said.
"For the last few days, we’ve been feeling like we’re back in the days of the Cold War. People have been ringing and saying ‘what’s going on?’ but they’ve been in Karachi."
Mustafa said unrestricted, foreign-based media are as a result providing a vital role.
"There’s no independent media. People have no source of information. This is the ideal environment for rumours," said Mustafa, who originates from Lahore, in the Punjab.
"This is increasing the uncertain situation. People are terrified about what’s going on, what’s going to happen."
Among recent speculation have been claims that Musharraf has been detained by army generals or that he was about to flee to Turkey. Opposition leader and former cricketer Imran Khan was said to have been assassinated.
Like a number of independent Pakistani channels such as GEO TV or ARY One, pkpolitics.com contains video clips and streaming, as well as audio, for those without access to satellite television.
But the site has also become a forum for discussion and mobilising protest.
Mustafa himself declares no political affiliation other than being "pro-democracy, never pro-dictatorship" but says with Pakistani troops cracking down on dissent on the streets, it is vital expats keep up the pressure.
A demonstration is planned for Wednesday outside the Pakistan High Commission in west London, involving students, lawyers and members of all political parties.
They include former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistani Muslim League, Khan’s Movement for Justice and other parties in the political alliance opposed to Musharraf’s regime.
Mustafa said Sharif’s brother, Shahbaz, was also expected to attend as similar protests are organised around Britain and further afield in countries like the Netherlands, France, Germany and the United States.
"We’re in a better position to give them this message to the West or what Musharraf is doing for his personal power," he added.
"He’s trying to fool the Western world in the name of the war on terrorism which is nothing to do with it.
"You can’t fight terrorism whilst the people of that country and society are not with you."
It doesnt mean anything. It can go right back in at any time if Musharoff wants it to. He’s another in a long series of maniacs the US has backed over the years, and who turns out to be the winner of the "Adolph Hitler Wanna Be" contest.

If Pakistan attacked them, there would be no need for America to use airstrikes
I doubt.
Pakistan government is fooling the world and its own people by saying something and doing otherwise,They are responsible for encouraging the Taliban and other terrorists organisations by funding them.Chk -

The devastating Mumbai attacks of 2008 saw a complete freeze in relations between Pakistan and India. The composite dialogue process was abandoned and there has been no official contact between the two neighbours….. uptil now. A between Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary and his Indian counterpart, Nirupama Rao was the official contact for over 14 months.
But have the talks managed to defuse trhe often explosive tensions between India and Pakistan… DawnNews Corespondent Hassan Sardar reports

i doubt it
Pakistan has finally hit the wall . Had enough of bad agreements with tribal leaders and is now taking the war to to them . Waziristan(sp), a northern territory of Pakistan , is the scene of bloody battles with hundreds dead on both sides .
Bin Laden told his Satanic Minions to declare war on Pakistan , and Musharef has obliged and responded heavily .
This is big news . But it’s not getting much play in the MSM . At least not the headlines that it deserves .
BTW , now that the rats are being backed into a corner , do you think they will or can strike back ?
EDIT* – I was in a hurry and forgot to add . . . . . Since this is a crucial battle in the war on terror , don’t you think EVERY news outlet should be running this story as a headliner ?
Westhill – I meant a ‘Headline’ story . I have Yahoo as my home page and this is what they consider to be ‘important’. . . see below

Some would say that if it doesn’t fit the media narrative of "Bush is wrong, the war on terror is a crock, and the US is losing" it doesn’t get covered.
And yes, I do expect these people to fight to the death rather than surrender. Dead terrorists? Works for me!

Has Pakistan become part of the USA now or something? Or is nothing going on in America lately?
um, no. but when is the last time you watched the news? Serious things are going on there , like the murder of their ex-prime minister yesterday, which could effect foreign policy and our government. Also, presidential elections could be effected as well as terrorist attacks on the united states because certain people in Pakistan are affiliated with terrorists and financially fund them.
You probably dont think all this effects you, however when sh*t like this goes down – oil prices, materials, transportation, gasoline and consumer products all go through the roof. Our economy sucks which effects your bottom line with your paycheck.
The stock market fell dramatically yesterday after the assasination and oil prices went up – say hello to $4 a gallon for gas!
UPDATE: Al Qaeda takes responsibility for the assisination and states: "We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahedeen,"
